On the surface, the columns looked fine. But true to form, you start poking around and prodding and it doesn’t take look to realize there are structural issues with the columns. So off they go to be repaired, and when they return, it is a beautiful marriage of mahogany and heart pine.
The original columns were heart pine. And counting their rings, their age is estimated at 90 years, plus the 100 they were holding up the house and this is some old wood. And heavy, estimated weight with the mahogany – 400- 500 pounds. And to put them back in the same spot, well that is no small feat. They had to be trimmed, primed (to prevent any future water damage), placed on new pedestals, porch roof jacked up, and 500 lbs of a tree, shimmed into the perfect spot to gracefully and proudly hold this house up.
The daily transformations that occur are overwhelming to me. This house was on the worst dressed list for years, and finally is it looking like the belle of the ball!
